UNDERCURRENTS
GROUP SHOW
ON DISPLAY AT GOVERNOR’S ACADEMY
NOVEMBER 28, 2023 – JANUARY 12, 2024
September 2023, Newbury, Massachusetts – Undercurrents, a group exhibition that includes artwork by Meghan Bailey, Amy Decker, Angelina Ruiz, and Belle Struck will be on view in the Remis Lobby Gallery at The Wilkie Center for Performing Arts from November 28 – January 12, 2023. A closing reception will be held Thursday, January 11, from 6-7 pm.
Using abstraction, design, and decoration, Bailey’s work combines traditionally gendered forms of discarded industrial tools and machines with abstraction, pattern, and decorative art using paint, collage, and print. Netting, stripes, and dots reference networks of digital circuitry that transmit a stream of shapes and colors. Fragmented components such as gaskets, gear teeth, and geometric lace combine to suggest an invented, hybrid mechanism that assimilates organic and decorative qualities. Shallow space and layered opaque shapes reflect encrypted digital spaces that hinder access, such as the flat, impenetrable screen of a computer, capable of projecting the illusion of depth. Visual dissonance and humor is created in the confusions of solid form and negative space; anxious objects and bright Pop colors. The accumulation of these visual elements creates unconventional constructions, a language of fluidity that interrupts power structures inherent in the original form.
Bailey is a Boston-based artist whose work has been shown in galleries throughout the Northeast. Bailey holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University, a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and an MS in Library Science and Archives Management from Simmons University. Meghan Bailey was born in Lawrence and lives in Arlington, MA. Her studio is at the Miller Street Studios in Somerville.
The Remis Lobby Gallery is located at the Wilkie Center for Performing Arts on the campus of The Governor’s Academy at 1 Elm Street, Newbury MA, 02123. The exhibit is open to the public weekdays 9-4 and on weekends by appointment. Please contact Shanna Fliegel sfliegel@govsacademy.org for weekend appointments.

ORGANIC MECHANISMS: NEW ARTWORK BY MEGHAN BAILEY
TO BE EXHIBITED AT WASHINGTON STREET GALLERY
APRIL 8 – APRIL 29, 2023
March 2023, Somerville, Massachusetts – Organic Mechanisms, an exhibition that features paintings, wall hangings, collage, and relief panels by Meghan Bailey, will be on view at Washington Street Gallery from April 8 – April 29, 2023. The opening reception is Saturday, April 15, 2023, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public.
Bailey’s current body of work transforms the imagery of discarded machines using abstraction, design, pattern, and bright Pop colors. Exploration with paint, collage, hand printing, and marker shifts the machinery into repurposed but impractical forms. The resulting forms suggest invented, hybrid mechanisms that merge mechanical features with natural and decorative qualities.
Organic Mechanisms features artworks Bailey created while completing her Master of Fine Art (MFA) at Lesley University College of Art & Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 2021 to 2023. Bailey also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Meghan Bailey was born in Lawrence and lives in Arlington. Her studio is at the Washington Street Art Center in Somerville.
Washington Street Gallery is located at 321 Washington Street, Somerville MA, 02123. Gallery hours are Saturdays 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. and by appointment.
